Our History & Mission
Founded in 2022, The Annex is an addiction support centre established in response to the ongoing mental health and substance abuse crisis in St. Thomas and throughout Ontario.

Just 10 years before, founder Ginny Trepanier opened The Grace Café, a cozy soup kitchen with a homelike atmosphere which not only provides meals to the hungry, but gives them a comfortable place to enjoy them.
Following the success of Grace Cafe, Trepanier noticed the growing need for attainable access to treatment and addiction services in the region and took immediate action. Soon after, Annex was created with a mission to provide resources and support to those impacted by addiction.

Mike Toth
Executive Director
I have spent many years ministering to the poor, the hungry, the addicted, and the homeless. We know we are unlikely to save every person and right every wrong, but we can work like we are able.
The greatest commandment is:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ To truly love one you have to love the other.”

Laura Westra
Addiction Counsellor
As Addiction Counselor, I love to meet and greet people, hear their stories, and begin their journey to health. I have worked for over 10 years in mental health and addictions, working with youth and adults in various fields. Every day, I have the privilege to help alleviate suffering and struggling, to make their day a little easier and a little brighter.
God helped me in my lived experience dealing with these struggles, and now, God helps me to lead by example, to share the hope that recovery is available to all, through love and acceptance, regardless of circumstances.

Tom Cruikshank

My name is Tom and I’m an addiction counselor at The Annex. I have been working in and around the field of mental health and addictions for over a decade.
I have a true passion for wanting to help anyone seeking it and try my best to help anyone along that journey.
With a diploma in “Drug and Alcohol Treatment Specialist” and my experience, I have acquired many tools that I’m able to pass onto those struggling with addiction.

Mindy Minka
Administrative Assistant
In my role as Administrative Assistant, I continue to see the hand of God, not only in the lives of our clients, but in our own lives. I have grown in my understanding and compassion for those who struggle with addiction. With roughly 30 years in administration, I enjoy helping the Annex team through my organizational skills.
In my early days as Manager, I was able to help The Annex get off the ground since opening and feel privileged that I can remain a part of this organization dedicated to the work that is so important to our community.
