Overcoming Addiction Shame: The Power of Honesty and Support

We are often taught from a young age to hide. Hide your pain, guard your thoughts, don’t tell, be a man. We live our lives to keep up with the Jonesess, to make a name, to be better than the next person. Even the current fashion of letting your emotions all hang out is actually form of hiding.

The burden of hiding an addiction is part of the lie of addiction. It is true that some people won’t understand and may think poorly of you, but they will do that anyway. You will never please everybody, but if you lay down the burden and darkness and shame of hiding and admit you have a problem you will find people who do understand, who do respect you, who will think well of you. Lay the burden of hiding down today, and find those that will walk with you anyway. They will be far more authentic than those that judge.
