Understanding Sobriety: Overcoming Pain and Building Healthy Relationships

There is an old saying in Alcoholics Anonymous: “Sick and tired of being sick and tired.” The point of the saying is that someone has a real chance at sobriety/recovery when the pain of continuing to use those drugs of choice is greater than the pain of quitting. It illustrates that drug use is far more about the avoidance of pain rather than the pursuit of pleasure.

As a friend or family member there is little that you can do to substantially change that person’s use until they reach that point, no matter how much your desire is for their change. Life can be difficult no matter what the circumstances, and having a few tools to positively affect those relationships can be helpful. Stay tuned for more details.
